If you’ve ever tapped a floor and heard that dull “tok-tok” instead of a solid knock, you already know the tile is loose underneath. It shows up in different ways depending on where it is: a bathroom wall tile that’s started curling at one edge, a living room floor tile that sounds hollow the moment you step on it, a balcony tile that just lets go and comes off the wall entirely. What does a hollow sound under a tile actually mean?

It removes the tile’s support right there, and it gives the tile room to flex a little every time someone walks over it, or the slab expands and contracts with temperature. C1-grade adhesive typically caps out around 0.5 MPa freeze-thaw resistance. C2 is rated for double that, and that extra margin is exactly what large or exterior tiles are leaning on. 2. The substrate wasn’t flat, clean, or sound

Adhesive only bonds to what it actually touches. Dust, old paint film, leftover curing compound, or a substrate with more than a few millimeters of dip and rise will all keep the trowel ridges from collapsing evenly. Same result every time: contact in some spots, air in others. Checking the substrate is solid, level, and free of loose material takes about ten minutes. Skipping it can cost a full day of callback work later.

Every tile adhesive has a window, the open time, during which it stays workable enough to bond properly. Leave it exposed too long and a skin forms on the surface.
